City of Franklin

Enter the City of Franklin and be prepared to be transported back to splendor and grandeur of the antebellum south of yesteryear. Home to more than 400 historic homes and structures, recognized by the National Registrar of Historic Places, Franklin is one of the most beautiful cities in America. Franklin is a city steeped in history and was home to five Louisiana governors, four U.S. senators, a Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, one lieutenant governor and the President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis. Sugar farming and refining, as well as carbon black production, are also mainstays of the Franklin economy. Franklin is located at a convergence of Bayou Teche and Charenton Canal, a waterway connecting the community to the Intracoastal Gulf Waterway. The community is also serviced by rail and U.S. Interstate 49. Franklin is the seat of government for St. Mary Parish.
